Houston Tamil Studies Chair (HTSC) is a 501(c)(3) Texas Non-profit corporation established to set up a Tamil Studies Chair at the University of Houston (UH). HTSC has signed an agreement with UH to fund $2 million to establish the chair before the end of 2026. HTSC has already funded $1 million in 2022 and expects to fund the remaining $1 Million before the end of 2026. As a result of funding $1 Million, UH will start the Houston Tamil Studies Chair Inc.’s
Research Endowment program in Fall 2024 and the program will support research program costs, equipment, and seminars with invited scholars who are experts on Tamil societies and the Tamil diaspora in the United States. After the second $1 million is funded, the endowment will be renamed The Houston Tamil Studies Chair Inc. Endowed Professorship, also called “HTSC Tamil Chair”. The endowed professorship will support research-enhancing activities in Tamil Studies of a faculty member within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. These activities will parallel any other Tamil programs sponsored by other organizations such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is an Indian Government organization established to foster, revive, and strengthen cultural relations between India and foreign countries by Promoting wider knowledge and appreciation of Indian languages and Establishing close contact between the Universities and cultural organizations. All details about ICCR can be viewed at https://www.iccr.gov.in/index.php/about-us/memorandum-association The University of Houston has partnered with the Indian government to expand its teaching and research on Tamil language, literature and culture. The University and the ICCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 29, 2023 to establish the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies, a position to be held by a visiting scholar from India with expertise in Tamil studies beginning in the fall of 2023. As part of the MOU, Dr. T. Vijayalakshmi was selected as a visiting professor to offer a course on the Tamil language in the fall of 2023.
Relationship Between HTSC and ICCR:
HTSC and ICCR are two independent organizations with some common objectives. and HTSC is engaged voluntarily in promoting the ICCR Tamil class to Greater Houstonians by publicizing the course through Newspapers, emails and other online media. In addition, as part of HTSC’s mission to promote the Tamil Language and its culture, HTSC offered five scholarships for $1,000 to the students attending the Tamil course offered at UH, and these scholarships were administered by UH. Thus, HTSC helped UH in promoting the Tamil course offered by UH sponsored by ICCR, just as HTSC would support any other organization promoting the Tamil Language at UH.
