Elwood Curtis’ college dream breaks next to a two-lane Florida Highway. With the main burden of an innocent misconception, he has been sentenced to the underworld of the Nickel Academy, a brutal reform that has dropped deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets another community, the Seid-it-all-gymnast. The two black teenagers open an alliance: gymnasts give basic tips for survival, Elwood, and clings to his optimistic worldview. Returned from the emerging civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence seem to be worlds of Rev. Martin Luther King’s Burned Oratory. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood tries to capture his humanity and awaken a new vision for gymnasts.
